Kolejna sugestia dotycząca zabytków Jeziora Rożnowskiego to ruiny Zamku Dolnego i Zamku Zawiszy Czarnego.

Jedziemy nią prosto około 850 metrów, do rozwidlenia ze znakiem ustąp pierwszeństwa przejazdu- skręcamy w lewo, a następnie w prawo do Remizy OSP. Naprzeciw znajduje się Zamek Dolny.

Kolejny przystanek naszej wycieczki to Ruiny Zamku Zawiszy Czarnego (zwanego Zamkiem Górnym).

Another suggestion concerning the sights around the Rożnów Lake is the ruins of the Lower Castle and the Zawisza Czarny Castle. Even though the buildings are very run-down and neglected, they constitute a certain historical trace of Rożnów’s past, and enthusiasts of history and this type of buildings will definitely see their forgotten beauty.

The Lower Castle – Its construction was started by Jan Tarnowski in the mid-16th century, most probably in fear of an attack from the Turks. It was never completed, but some elements were finished, including a siege tower (belluard), a stronghold, a gate building, and a curtain wall. The belluard was a modern building modelled on Italian fortifications. Later, it served as a distillery and a cannon-foundry. However, the complete castle was never built. Some sources state that a temporary wooden castle was constructed.  Legends have it that the building was supposed to be connected with the Zawisza Czarny Castle via an underground passageway.

In order to get to the ruins of the Lower Castle from the Crags, take the road opposite the “Domek do wynajęcia przy Skałkach” cottage (it turns downwards from the main road). Follow the road for about 850 metres to the fork with a give way sign, turn left, and then right to the OSP fire station. The Lower Castle is located opposite.

The next stop on our trip is the ruins of the Zawisza Czarny Castle (called the Upper Castle). Take the road you used to get here, but don’t turn – drive straight towards St. Adalbert’s Church. The ruins are situated about 1.5 km away from the Lower Castle. At the fork next to the church, turn right and follow the road until you see the ruins on the left. The castle was most probably built in the mid-14th century. Zawisza Czarny (Zawisza the Black), a knight known from the Battle of Grunwald, obtained it by taking it in pledge. The castle was the object of numerous family feuds. Its last owner was Jan Tarnowski, who left it due to the lack of expansion possibilities (especially in terms of its defensive function) and started the construction of a new castle (the Lower Castle), which would expand the fortification of the Dunajec Valley. With time, the Zawisza Czarny Castle fell into ruin, leaving behind just a few fragments of the wall, an outline of the courtyard, and the remains of the tower. Just like the ruins of the Lower Castle, the building is forlorn and neglected and in spite of its favourable location and interesting history, it is slowly becoming inaccessible due to the growing thickets.
